Domaine de Triennes St. Auguste, Provence, France, 2008

Domaine de Triennes represents a collaboration between two of Burgundy’s greatest names: Jacques Seysses, founder of Domaine Dujac and Aubert de Villaine, co-owner of Domaine de la Romanée-Conti. In 1989 they purchased a neglected 46 hectare estate in Provence after being impressed by the site’s Southern exposure; the clay and limestone soils similar to the great terroirs of Burgundy and St. Emilion; and the climate with its warm days and cool nights, a characteristic of the most exceptional appellations.

Domaine Triennes has many Roman ruins on the estate and the vineyards themselves are planted on the slopes of Mont Aurélien, named after Aurelius Augustus, the Roman emperor. So the first red wine produced was named Les Aureliens, a reference to the location and a tip of the cap to the region’s Roman history. It was only natural that the counterpart to Les Auréliens should be Auguste (remember Aurelius Augustus). They also selected St. Auguste because the celebration of St. Auguste is Feb. 29 (think leap year) and, much like this wine, it doesn’t happen every year.

The 2008 Domaine de Triennes St. Auguste is 50% Syrah, 40% Cabernet, 10% Merlot fermented in 2-6 year old Allier oak barrels previously used at Domaine Dujac. The result is a dark, dense wine with spicy aromas and notes of ripe red fruit. The palate is rich and full of life with plenty of structure.
