Nicolaus (“Nicky”) and Gaby Hahn found their first vineyards in the late ‘70s in Monterey County. In 1988, sensing the potential of the region, Nicky Hahn advocated a new wine appellation and his pioneering effort ultimately led to the creation of one of the most exciting and highly-lauded U.S. wine appellations today: the Santa Lucia Highlands (SLH).
The Hahn SLH wines, which epitomize the appellation as well as the passion and commitment of the Hahn Family, are created from the fruit of these meticulously planted hillside vineyards. These wines are produced completely in the Santa Lucia Highlands—from the ground to the barrel to the bottle—at Hahn Estates Winery.
The SLH Chardonnay is a blend of different Chardonnay clones planted on the estate vineyards. After the fruit was handpicked and sorted, the grapes were whole-cluster pressed and fermented entirely in small French oak barrels. Part of the wine also underwent a secondary malolactic fermentation. The wine is then hand-stirred on the lees every 3 weeks for 9 months and then aged in barrel. Winemaker Paul Clifton selected the barrels he felt best expressed the aromas, flavors and texture of the Santa Lucia Highlands. Winemaker tasting note: "Creamy and lush with vanilla and toasted oak; crisp and juicy with bright fruit and silky texture; full-flavored and balanced with a long, rich finish.”
