Also known around the globe as Mataro and Monastrell, Mourvèdre (more-VEHD-ruh) has been part of California “field blends” for more than a century. Fred Cline was responsible for rescuing precious acreage of old Mourvèdre plantings in the 1970s. This grape produces sturdy wines with good acid and some astringency and can develop enticing blackberry aromas and flavors - they are generally meaty, intense wines that age well. Mourvèdre is also notable in France as the prime ingredient in the red and rosé wines of Bandol.
The Oakley ranch is home to Cline’s Ancient Vines - some of the oldest and rarest grapevines in California ranging in age from 80-120 years old. The Ancient Vines Mourvèdre draws from some of this estate’s oldest and most historic vineyard blocks. These blocks produce fruit that is of intense concentration with the help of sensitive farming practices, the distinctive Oakley terroir, and the cooling band of air that flows in from the San Joaquin and Sacramento Rivers. This 100% Mourvèdre offers a hint of Eucalyptus on the nose, distinct chocolate characteristics and a luscious deep plum flavor. This wine pairs nicely with grilled lamb, wild mushroom ragout, duck confit or peppercorn crusted beef tenderloin.
