Saint Cosme, located north of the village of Gigondas, is the most ancient estate in France’s Southern Rhone wine region. The estate is run by its passionate and talented proprietor and vigneron, Louis Barruol who represents the 14th generation of his family to hold this position. The estate vineyards consist of 15 hectares of old vines (around 60 years old) and the viticulture is all done organically.
This wine is 45% Viognier, 20% Marsanne, 25% Picpoul de Pinet and 10% Clairette fermented in small casks and aged on the lees. This is the 3rd vintage in a row that offers such great climate conditions for the whites. The cool temperatures really allows the Chateau's whites to be better wines and age well. As Barruol says, "Almost all the growers in the southern Rhône tend to pick their whites a bit too late. We always want more ripening this is often a good option for red winemaking and it is often a bad option for white winemaking."
Tasting Notes: This medium-bodied wine displays oodles of tropical fruit, citrus and floral notes and a pure, crisp and lengthy personality. This wine has great texture with a beautifully integrated acidity and is incredibly versatile at the dinner table. Drink it over the coming 1-2 years, but it'll probably drink well for alot longer.
