Feudo Maccari Nero d'Avola, Sicily, Italy, 2012

This island off the southern coast of the Italian peninsula is one of Italy’s largest wine-producing regions and has the most vine acreage planted of all the Italian wine regions. Just over a mile from the sea on the southern tip of Sicily, Antonio Moretti established Feudo Maccari in 2000. The estate is assembled from more than fifty separate plots of land, which translates to more complexity in their portfolio of wines. This wine is 100% Nero d’Avola which exhibits inviting aromas of red fruit and spice. The palate rewards with savory flavors of black cherry, licorice and a hint of tobacco framed by just the right amount of acid and tannin.

Dark cherries, flowers, licorice and tobacco come to life in this medium bodied, expressive wine. There is more than enough underlying structure to ensure at least several years of exceptional drinking. If this were Burgundy, the price would be twice as high.
