Every so often a region has a winemaking family or estate which acts as an engine, pulling the entire area upward and into the limelight of international recognition. The Northern Rhône had Guigal, Australia had Max Schubert at Penfolds Grange, Chile has Concha y Toro — and now there is the Cerulli Spinozzi family in Italy’s Abruzzi region, working with the native red grape, Montepulciano.

This wine is 100% Montepulciano, a red grape cultivated predominantly in central and southern Italy which is often called Montepulciano d’Abruzzo. Despite the name, this varietal is in no way linked with Vino Nobile di Montepulciano. The Tuscan wine is named for the town, while that of the Abruzzi bears the name of the variety, which predominates in the grape mixture from which it is made. Montepulciano is know for producing deeply colored red wines with ripe, robust tannins.

This wine is a beautifully intense, ruby red color with violet hues. Fragrant aromas of ripe cherry, blackberry, and violet accompany flavors of juicy black fruit and spice with supple tannins and a deliciously food-friendly acidity.
